Obama Should not Scrap Protections for Endangered Species–SPEAK OUT, AMERICA!

Dear Kevin,

The Obama government is now accepting comments on a draft policy that would sharply limit the number of species given protection under the Endangered Species Act. The policy in question is a Bush-era throwback that ignores entire populations of imperiled species.

Unlike weaker wildlife laws, the Endangered Species Act does not require a species to be at risk of global extinction to qualify for protection; it must only be at risk in a “significant portion of its range.” This provision ensures species are protected before they’re past the point of no return; it fulfills the Act’s purpose of protecting the ecosystems on which endangered species depend.

Unfortunately the policy the Obama administration is proposing would ignore historic losses of habitat and reestablish the global-endangerment criterion — a standard that has already allowed the government to downplay the urgent plight of the cactus ferruginous pygmy owl.

Please take action now to tell President Obama’s Interior Department not to shut out animals and plants that desperately need the Act’s protection.

Sample letter content:

Subject: Comment on Policy on Significant Portion of Range

I am writing to request that you rescind the proposed policy interpreting the phrase “significant portion of its range” (SPOIR), and replace it with a policy that will truly ensure that species are not lost from significant portions of range.

The draft policy specifies that a portion of the range of a species is significant only if “its contribution to the viability of the species is so important that without that portion, the species would be in danger of extinction.” This definition does not provide a meaningful distinction between when a species is endangered in a SPOIR and when a species is endangered throughout all its range, thereby rendering the SPOIR phrase superfluous and nullifying any conservation benefit of protecting species before they are threatened with worldwide extinction.

The draft policy further specifies that when considering whether a species is endangered in a SPOIR, only the current range of a species will be considered. Ignoring historic range when determining whether species are endangered in significant portions of range amounts to a shifting baseline, whereby species that experienced major declines are considered secure only because the analysis is limited solely to current range. Such an approach is clearly not in the interest of species conservation.

I ask that you rescind this anti-science, anti-common-sense draft policy and instead adopt one that considers the significance of both current and historic range and adopts a broad definition of significance that considers many factors when evaluating portions of range, including biological importance, ecological value and size.

Sincerely,

Please take action by February 7, 2012.

CONFERENCE TO ORGANIZE AGAINST THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX RUINING OUR HOMELAND, AMERICA!

LET’S TRY DEMOCRACY

http://davidswanson.org
MIC at 50 -
A National Conference in Charlottesville, Va.

A Conference on Moving Money from the Military to Human Needs — http://micat50cville.org

Reserve your spot to attend this conference now! The fees increase after September 1st: Register.

Over 20 speakers will lead the discussion, planning, and organizing. Speakers will include retired Army Colonel Ann Wright, author Bruce Levine, retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and former Pentagon desk officer Karen Kwiatkowski, author Robert Jensen, international affairs analyst Helena Cobban, retired CIA officer Ray McGovern, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space Bruce Gagnon, executive director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee Shahid Buttar, author and West Point graduate Paul Chappell, and many more. See the speakers and agenda.

In Charlottesville, as around the country, increasingly the best place to look for a job is in the military-weapons-logistics-spying-reconstruction industry. There were 161 military contractors in Charlottesville taking in $919,914,918 through 2,737 contracts from the federal government between 2000 to 2010. And the trend is ever upward, the budget “crisis” notwithstanding.

This flood of money creates jobs less efficiently than investment in most other industries or even tax cuts. We are putting over half of every dollar of federal income tax and borrowing into the military. We could cut this by 85% and still be the top-spending nation in the world militarily. Meanwhile we are failing to invest in infrastructure, green energy, education, housing, jobs, and care for our young, old, and ill. The current trend will ruin us economically, as well as in terms of civil liberties, representative government, environmental destruction, social cohesion, hostile blowback, and weapons proliferation. Reining in the MIC has become a matter of survival.

We can and must turn this around!

Reserve your spot to attend this conference now! The fees increase after September 1st: Register.

The low registration fees (just $30 or $15 for students) are made possible by sponsorships and donations from those who are able.

KS COMMON SENSE writer ASKS–”With a 3 trillion dollar war and security budget for 2010-2012, why are we not cutting that instead of conservation, America!?”

Dear USA Senators and Congresmen,

I have signed an email to you today stating:

I’m writing to urge you to stop polluters from hijacking the budget bill (HR 1), which is an attack on our nation’s bedrock conservation laws — including the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and Clean Air Act — and endangers the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the wildlife and lands we cherish.

I don’t want to see a shutdown of the federal government, but the far reaching anti-environmental riders and draconian spending cuts in HR 1 should be rejected. Ensuring a healthy environment for our kids and families and for wildlife should not be a partisan issue; it is a deeply held value that millions of Americans share.

Gutting landmark conservation legislation has nothing to do with balancing the budget and these provisions should be stripped before any final agreement is reached. Moreover, funding for critical wildlife conservation programs should be restored. It’s not credible to make these cuts when billions in subsidies for oil and gas companies remain untouched.

The WORLD WILDLIFE fUND, THE NATIONAL WILDLIFE ACTION FUND, and I are incredulous at your behavior and siregard fr basic sustainable development concepts?

Stop the Stealth Attack on Wildlife

After nearly disappearing from most of the United States decades ago, the bald eagle is now flourishing — a national success story and a testament to the vital role of conservation laws.

Sadly, right now, a stealth attack is being made on many of our nation’s most important wildlife conservation laws, including the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and Clean Air Act.

The federal budget bill that Congress is expected to vote on THIS WEEK would advance the agenda of our country’s biggest polluters at the expense of wildlife, and the clean air and water on which we all depend.

Please speak up for wildlife TODAY by editing and sending the message below, urging Congress and President Obama to stop this stealth attack on our nation’s bedrock conservation laws.

America, is your governor trying to Keep your State addicted to foreign Oil? Recall them in 2011-2012

America, is your governor trying to Keep your State addicted to foreign Oil? Recall them in 2011-2012–kAS

Dear Kevin,

With gas prices nearing $4 a gallon and oil prices over $100 per barrel, it is hard to believe that Tea Party-backed governors— like Wisconsin’s Scott Walker—are doing everything they can to keep us addicted to oil.

As one of the starkest examples, these governors are rejecting billions of dollars to build 21st century high-speed rail that would help cut our dangerous dependence on oil and reduce harmful pollution.

Click here to help us fight the radical, anti-environment Tea Party agenda by standing up for clean, efficient, affordable transportation policies.

In just a few weeks, new transportation legislation will be introduced in the U.S. House. But Tea Party-backed governors are already standing firmly opposed to transportation solutions that reduce oil consumption while putting Americans back to work.

*
In Wisconsin, Governor Walker rejected an $810 million federal grant for a high-speed rail line between Milwaukee and Madison, declaring the project “dead.”
*
In Ohio, Governor John Kasich turned down nearly $400 million from the Department of Transportation for a high-speed rail line between Cleveland and Cincinnati.
*
In Florida, Governor Rick Scott—siding with his backers in the Tea Party—rejected $2.4 billion in Department of Transportation funds for a rail line between Tampa and Orlando

But we’re not standing by and letting the Tea Party take over—two weeks ago, in protest of Governor Scott’s decision, we helped mobilize more than 3,000 Floridians to stand up and speak out.

Stand up to the Tea Party and their corporate backers— support environmentally-sound, job-creating clean transportation solutions like high-speed rail. Click here to sign our petition to Congress.

Increasing access to high-speed rail, public transit and other low carbon transportation options will create good-paying jobs and reduce our addiction to oil. A recent analysis of the 2009 Recovery Act found that public transportation projects created 70 percent more jobs per dollar than road projects.

With over 70 percent of the oil used by the U.S. in the transportation sector and Congress poised to act on transportation legislation, we can’t sit idly by and let corporate special interests set the agenda. We can’t afford to stay silent while Tea Party activists set out to destroy sound, job-creating transportation policies that are good for our environment and our economy.

Click here to tell Congress that America needs a transportation system that ends our dependence on oil and provides clean, efficient, and affordable transportation options.

Corporate special interests and their Tea Party allies are attacking our environment on all fronts, but we are fighting their radical, pro-polluter agenda at every turn, at every level of government. We hope you’ll stand with us.
