This is what you need to write your Congressman today. Bring Troops home!!!

I write to urge you to strongly oppose the provisions of H.R. 968, the Detainee Security Act of 2011.

At a time when resources are needed at home more than ever, the bill would expand the Global War on Terror by widening the scope of the original 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force from those who "planned, authorized, committed, or aided" the 9/11 attacks to more generally al-Qaeda, the Taliban and any group the Secretary of Defense claims are associated with them, anywhere in the world. If passed, the legislation cedes decisions on the future use of military force solely to the President, abdicating vital Congressional oversight, and would all but ensure longer and deeper military action by the U.S. for years to come.

In addition, it would eliminate the vital role civilian law enforcement agencies play in addressing the crime of terrorism, and further undermine the oversight of the U.S. judicial system, making it essentially impossible to close the notorious prison at Guantanamo and heal the tragic legacy of U.S.-sponsored torture.

In the wake of the killing of Osama bin Laden, I believe now is the moment for the US to end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and with them, the so-called "War on Terror". Our wallets can't afford the alternative. Our morals demand we end - not expand - these wars.

Please oppose H.R. 968, as well as any effort to incorporate its dangerous and misguided provisions into other legislation in this Congress.
