Rising food prices have pushed 44 million more people into hunger--but what is your Congress doing?
Dear friend,
This year, rising food prices have pushed 44 million more people into hunger.
Tell Congress to protect global hunger programs.
Help us send 5,000 messages by May 24 and save the programs that feed millions.
Every 9 seconds, a child dies from hunger-related causes.
That's about how long it took you to read this far. And if Congress cuts hunger programs that make up less than one-tenth of 1% of the budget, even more people will go hungry.
This is a critical moment – urge Congress to protect programs that save lives around the world.
Here at Mercy Corps, we won't stand by while people go hungry, even in dangerous, conflict-ridden parts of the world.
Congress has lost sight of the fact that lives are at stake. We need your help to stop cuts that would:
* Deny 7 million young children access to the nutrients they need to stay healthy.
* Eliminate the support that 18 million small farmers need to feed their families.
* Put children's lives at risk in countries such as Haiti, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Sudan, where rising food prices mean increasing unrest.
We need to send 5,000 messages to Congress by May 24 – don't wait to stand up for the world's most vulnerable people.
With one in seven people worldwide going to bed hungry each night and record-high food prices pushing millions more into extreme poverty, this is not the moment for Congress to be cutting off the lifeline that millions of people around the world depend on. Thank you for protecting the families who need our help.
Sincerely,
Dan O'Neill

Dear Rep. Kay Granger and Rep. Nita Lowey,
As a constituent and a Mercy Corps supporter, I'm writing today to urge you to protect programs that fight global hunger in the Fiscal Year 2012 budget.
Food prices reached record highs this year. And it's children who are suffering the most. Every day, more than 9,500 children die from hunger-related causes. That's one child every nine seconds.
This is not the moment to cut the lifeline these children and their families depend on. Yet some members of Congress have proposed cuts that would slash foreign aid programs by 15% - eliminating programs that help 18 million small farmers grow the food they need to feed their families, deny 7 million children access to nutritional supplements during their most critical years, and help people in the world's most dangerous places lift themselves out of poverty forever.
And these cuts would have dangerous security implications in countries such as Haiti, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Sudan where rising food prices mean increasing unrest.
These cuts are irresponsible and unnecessary. Funding for programs that combat global hunger makes up less than a tenth of a percent of the federal budget - too little to help balance the budget - yet feeds millions of people. With this many lives at stake, I ask that you look elsewhere for cuts and protect the world's most vulnerable children.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
Tell Congress to protect programs that fight global hunger.
Food prices reached record highs this year – and the number of people going to bed hungry each night is growing. Today, a child will die from hunger-related causes every 9 seconds.
Right now, Congress is considering cutting funding for programs that combat global hunger – programs that make up less than one-tenth of 1% of the federal budget, but feed millions of people worldwide. If we don't act now, even more people could go hungry.
As chairman and ranking member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, Kay Granger and Nita Lowey can preserve this funding and help reduce hunger around the world.
Help us send 5,000 messages to Reps. Kay Granger and Nita Lowey by May 24 – take action today.
