49 countries around the world have lower rates of maternal mortality than the U.S.--Tell congress to Improve America!!!

Dear Member of Congress,

As one of the million members of MomsRising, I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor the Maternal Health Accountability Act (HR 894).

Did you know that 49 countries around the world have lower rates of maternal mortality than the U.S.? At a time when other countries around the world have dramatically reduced deaths during pregnancy and childbirth, the rates of death in the U.S. have almost doubled. African American women in this country are four times more likely to die from pregnancy/childbirth than Caucasian women.

Perhaps most shocking, approximately 90% of these deaths are preventable when women receive basic medical care.

HR 894 would put in place simple, common sense measures that would put us towards a path of reducing maternal mortality. The bill would establish funding for states to allow them to report and investigate all pregnancy-related deaths as well as create a panel of medical experts to review these data and recommend strategies to reduce maternal deaths. This is a critical first step to preventing so many women from dying from pregnancy-related complication in our nation.

Last week, we celebrated Mother's Day. Now, it's time to fight to ensure that all pregnant women survive to celebrate the holiday.

p.s. 90% of these deaths are preventable.
Currently, 49 countries around the world have lower rates of maternal mortality than the U.S. And the number of women dying during pregnancy and childbirth in our nation is rising each year. We can't fix this problem until we know exactly how many women are dying and why.
Ask your Members of Congress to co-sponsor the Maternal Health Accountability Act (HR 894) today.
