Representative Barbara Lee and 47 original co-sponsors introduced the Responsible End to the War in Afghanistan Act (HR 780). The bill was introduced one week after the release of the latest Gallup poll which found that 72% of Americans want to see Congress take action to speed up the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. When will Congress catch up to the people who sent them to Washington? FORCE CONGRESS TO CATCH UP! CONTACT THEM.

Apparently, HR 780, introduced last week, is the Bill to press into Law this Spring 2010. Join the 72% of Americans against prolonging the war and contact your congressmen–and then Senators this Spring.

Dear Kevin,

You might have missed it, but there was GOOD news from Capitol Hill last week. On Thursday, Representative Barbara Lee and 47 original co-sponsors introduced the Responsible End to the War in Afghanistan Act (HR 780).

The bill was introduced one week after the release of the latest Gallup poll which found that 72% of Americans want to see Congress take action to speed up the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.

The question now is when will Congress catch up to the people who sent them to Washington?

Members of Congress are home this week for the Presidents Day break and this gives us a chance to remind them why they are called “REPRESENTATIVES”!

Look up your Member of Congress and find out where he or she is making public appearances this week, particularly if they are hosting District Town Meetings, put it on your “to-do list” and show up!

http://www.house.gov/

We need as many friends and allies as possible to make a direct point to Members of Congress — oppose the war in Afghanistan and start ending the war by becoming a co-sponsor of Congresswoman Lee’s bill. If your Member of Congress already is a co-sponsor, express your thanks and explain why their opposition is so important.

No public appearances this week? No problem – make a call to their nearest District Office with the same message — oppose the war and become a co-sponsor or Congresswoman Lee’s bill.

Here is what Congresswoman Lee had to say about the bill and the fight ahead to end the war in Afghanistan:

“The Responsible End to the War in Afghanistan Act already has bipartisan support, and more importantly, reflects the opinion of the majority of the American people who overwhelmingly favor ending the war. Now it is time for Congress to hear from individuals across the United States saying NO to more resources, more bombs, and more troops for a counterproductive war – that means you! Please forward this message to your family, friends and neighbors to help raise awareness for this important cause. It is time to end this war!”

Other friends in Congress took advantage of the wide open debate on the federal budget last week to focus attention on the fact that 23% of the federal deficits accumulated since 2003 are the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. On Wednesday the House approved an amendment to the 2011 Appropriations bill to save billions of dollars on a redundant jet engine that even the Pentagon doesn’t want. (Over the opposition, we might add, of “fiscal conservative” Speaker John Boehner whose Congressional District happens to help build the needless engine.) Amendments by Reps. Jones and Nadler, meanwhile, gained support from a growing number of Republican Members willing to buck their leadership and oppose the war in Afghanistan.

Now it’s OUR turn — visit or call your Member of Congress this week — ask them to cosponsor Rep. Barbara Lee’s Responsible End to the War in Afghanistan Act (HR 780).

The new Congress needs to hear from us on the war — there is no better time than now!

Thank you for working for peace,

Tom, Ryan, Daniel and the Win Without War team
